Q:

A:
Please contact us at the studio by email or phone. We would be happy to discuss your registration with you or you can find out more about our fees, fee regulations, policies and how to register from our registration area. We will be accepting registrations for our 2008/2009 programs from new and returning students as of June 23, 2008. Registration is first come, first serve!

Registrations can be completed online in our registration area or mailed in/dropped off at the studio throughout the summer. We will also be accepting registration at our Open Houses! Classes fill up quickly! Don’t delay – register today!

Q:
How do I know which levels of classes to register in?
A:
CSD is proud to offer quality instruction to students of all ages and levels of ability. For new students, acceptance into classes is based on class availability, age, and previous experience. Through either a verbal consultation with a parent (for children 10 years of age and younger or for those who have completed examinations), or an assessment class (for children 11 years of age and older) a CSD faculty member will determine which class is appropriate. Returning students are accepted into all classes based on the recommendation reports made by their teachers. In all situations, the final decision about the most suitable class for a student is made by CSD faculty, not by a parent or by the student themselves.

We have specialized programs for toddlers to age 6 in our Junior School, classes for children and teens, and adult classes as well. The only classes offered at CSD where acceptance is determined by an audition or by invitation only are the CSD dance companies.

Please contact us for further details about any of our dance classes offered and/or summer programs.

Q:
 When do classes begin?
A:
Classes commence Saturday, September 6, 2008. All of our important dates are listed on the website or in our newsletter.

Q:
What do I need to wear to dance class?
A:
CSD uses a dance uniform for each class; please consult the dress code list for appropriate dancewear. The dress code will be STRICTLY adhered to. No jewellery is permitted in class (except medic alert bracelets). Please be properly groomed for dance class. It shows that you respect the art of dance and are proud to be a dancer!

Q:
 Where do I buy dancewear?
A:
CSD offers parents a chance to buy and sell gently used dancewear at our Annual Dance Swaps held in conjunction with our Open Houses.

We also have a bulletin board at the studio, which serves as a year-round "trading post" for parents to list items that they have "for sale" or items that are "wanted".

At some of our Open Houses, staff from Inspirations will be available to sell dancewear items from their store as well as assist with fittings and take dancewear orders for our studio's dress code. Orders will be delivered to CSD for the first week of classes.

Local stores where dancewear may be purchased:
Inspirations: 54A Queen Street South, Kitchener www.inspirationsdancewear.com
The Dressing Room: 55 Erb Street West, Waterloo

Q:
How should I do my hair for dance class?
A:
All ballet students at CSD are required to wear a proper bun with hairpins and a hairnet. "How to Make a Bun" sheets are available at the studio in the office. See the dress code for other hair requirements for other classes.

Q:
Can I watch my child’s dance class?
A:
Yes, our studios have large viewing windows into each of our two main floor studios and all three studios feature french glass doors that parents and students can also watch through. We also have several opportunities for you to observe your dancer at performances throughout the year.

Q:
Where do I park at the studio?
A:
There is free parking at CSD. When you turn into 295 Weber Street, stay to the left and drive to the back of the property, where there is a drop-off area and parking available. If the lot is full, there is parking available in front of the other businesses at our location after 5pm. Please do not park next door at the MediSpa parking lot.

Q:
What are dance examinations? Why should I take one?
A:
At CSD, students are encouraged to take Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet examinations and jazz and tap exams with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) once they reach Grade 1 level. The actual examination is very similar to a regular class. It consists of memorized exercises and a dance, which are set at the appropriate level for the class being examined. This enables the dancer to work toward an attainable goal and continually improve his or her standard.

Annual examinations are not compulsory; nevertheless, for students, exams offer a challenge and a great sense of achievement; for parents, they give an indication of their child’s progress, and for the teacher, they present proof of their expertise and professionalism. Examinations may also lead to professional accreditation and a career in performance or dance instruction.

Q:
Is there a performance at the end of the year?
A:
At the end of each dancing year, in June, we mount a professional production, held at the Humanities Theatre at the University of Waterloo. Dates and more information can be found in our production area.
